Did you ever wonder why we celebrate Mother’s Day? The history of Mother’s Day dates back to 1907 when Anna Jarvis held the first memorial service for her mother who died in early May. The service took place in a West Virginia church honoring the life of her mother who made tremendous sacrifices during wartimes to help other mothers by teaching them how to care for their children, establish sanitary practices to prevent disease and promote peace and unity around the globe. These mothers loved fiercely and sacrificed greatly for their children and families. In the following years Jarvis undertook a massive letter writing campaign to newspapers and politicians requesting national recognition for mothers. As a result, in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson established the 2nd Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
