Around 2018, the state of Ohio noticed gaps in high school graduates lacking professional skills. As a result, the Ohio Department of Education, the Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation and state of Ohio employers worked together to develop a program to help students show they are ready for their next steps after high school. This program teaches students necessary skills while also earning academic high school credits toward graduation.

Ohio Means Jobs Readiness Seals are earned by students who demonstrate competency in 15 predetermined skills. Mentors work with the students to give first-hand information on what it takes to be successful in their next steps after high school. Some of the skill areas to demonstrate proficiency include critical thinking/problem-solving, oral and written communication to name a few. Competency needs to be demonstrated in school, in the workplace and in community settings.

Whether applying to college, enlisting in the military, or joining the workforce, having the Readiness Seals give students an advantage. The seal certifies that owners possess the needed set of professional skills to succeed.
